Try fewer words or clear filters. Clear the filters and look again; shelters add new pets every day. Show 48 more pets Back to top [All adoptable pets](https://ncpetproject.org/adopt/) [How this list works](https://ncpetproject.org/adopt/how-it-works/) Listings from 348 North Carolina shelters and rescues, checked October 17, 2026. Each pet links to its shelter, and the full list is on [shelters and rescues](https://ncpetproject.org/adopt/shelters/). Pets are adopted every day, so a pet shown here may already have found a home. ## What the list shows today The 301 senior dogs on the list today are spread across 54 counties; the most are listed in Wake County (43), Mecklenburg County (41) and Alamance County (18). About 50% are listed by rescues and 50% by public and nonprofit shelters, and about 58% live in foster homes rather than at a shelter, so a visit may need an appointment. From the shelter and rescue listings NC Pet Project read on October 17, 2026. Each shelter sets its own labels, ages and foster status. ## About senior dogs Older shelter pets are just as loving and loyal as young ones, yet they are typically the last to be adopted. Age does not limit a pet's ability to bond with a new family. Ages come from each shelter and are often an estimate. A puppy or kitten here is listed by its shelter as under one year old, and a senior dog as eight years or older. Before you adopt, read our guides to [adopting versus buying a dog in NC](https://ncpetproject.org/adopt-vs-buy-dog-nc/) and [fostering a shelter pet in NC](https://ncpetproject.org/fostering-pets-nc/). Source: [ASPCA: Reconsider senior pets](https://www.aspca.org/news/reconsider-senior-pets). ## NC rescues for senior dogs We have not confirmed a North Carolina rescue that focuses on senior dogs yet. Our guide to [finding a legitimate rescue in North Carolina](https://ncpetproject.org/find-legitimate-rescue-nc/) explains what to look for, and every pet above links to its own shelter. ## Get an email when a new senior dog is listed in NC **Coming soon.** Sign up now and you'll be first; we'll email you once to confirm before alerts start.
