Listings from 348 North Carolina shelters and rescues, checked October 17, 2026. Each pet links to its shelter, and the full list is on shelters and rescues. Pets are adopted every day, so a pet shown here may already have found a home.

What the list shows today

The 301 senior dogs on the list today are spread across 54 counties; the most are listed in Wake County (43), Mecklenburg County (41) and Alamance County (18). About 50% are listed by rescues and 50% by public and nonprofit shelters, and about 58% live in foster homes rather than at a shelter, so a visit may need an appointment.

From the shelter and rescue listings NC Pet Project read on October 17, 2026. Each shelter sets its own labels, ages and foster status.

About senior dogs

Older shelter pets are just as loving and loyal as young ones, yet they are typically the last to be adopted. Age does not limit a pet's ability to bond with a new family.

Ages come from each shelter and are often an estimate. A puppy or kitten here is listed by its shelter as under one year old, and a senior dog as eight years or older.
