All adoptable pets How this list works

Listings from 348 North Carolina shelters and rescues, checked October 21, 2026. Each pet links to its shelter, and the full list is on shelters and rescues. Pets are adopted every day, so a pet shown here may already have found a home.

What the list shows today

The 123 pets other than dogs and cats on the list today are spread across 19 counties; the most are listed in Guilford County (27), Wake County (25) and Buncombe County (23). About 42% are listed by rescues and 58% by public and nonprofit shelters, and about 54% live in foster homes rather than at a shelter, so a visit may need an appointment. Of the 109 with an age listed, the typical (median) age is about 2 years. One is already marked adoption pending.

From the shelter and rescue listings NC Pet Project read on October 21, 2026. Each shelter sets its own labels, ages and foster status.

About pets other than dogs and cats

Pot-bellied pigs grow much bigger than piglet photos suggest: a full grown pig averages about 120 to 150 pounds, so check your local zoning and any homeowners association rules before bringing one home. Reptiles such as bearded dragons need special lighting, a full spectrum UV bulb for about 12 to 14 hours a day.

Each shelter labels its own animals. Some list a rabbit or guinea pig only by its breed, or not at all, so a pet that fits this page may only show on the full list of other pets, and a label can be a staff member's best guess.
