All adoptable pets How this list works

Listings from 348 North Carolina shelters and rescues, checked October 21, 2026. Each pet links to its shelter, and the full list is on shelters and rescues. Pets are adopted every day, so a pet shown here may already have found a home.

What the list shows today

The 26 guinea pigs and small pets on the list today are spread across 6 counties; the most are listed in Guilford County (12), Wake County (6) and Cumberland County (3). About 46% are listed by rescues and 54% by public and nonprofit shelters, and about 46% live in foster homes rather than at a shelter, so a visit may need an appointment. Of the 26 with an age listed, the typical (median) age is about a year.

From the shelter and rescue listings NC Pet Project read on October 21, 2026. Each shelter sets its own labels, ages and foster status.

About guinea pigs and small pets

Guinea pigs live about five to seven years and do best with another guinea pig for company. They cannot make their own vitamin C, so they need it from food every day, such as fresh bell pepper. Chinchillas can live 8 to 12 years or longer and overheat easily, even at 80 to 85 degrees.

Each shelter labels its own animals. Some list a rabbit or guinea pig only by its breed, or not at all, so a pet that fits this page may only show on the full list of other pets, and a label can be a staff member's best guess.
