Listings from 348 North Carolina shelters and rescues, checked October 17, 2026. Each pet links to its shelter, and the full list is on shelters and rescues. Pets are adopted every day, so a pet shown here may already have found a home.

What the list shows today

The 1,068 puppies on the list today are spread across 68 counties; the most are listed in Wake County (120), Mecklenburg County (62) and Cabarrus County (57). About 45% are listed by rescues and 55% by public and nonprofit shelters, and about 44% live in foster homes rather than at a shelter, so a visit may need an appointment. 10 are already marked adoption pending.

From the shelter and rescue listings NC Pet Project read on October 17, 2026. Each shelter sets its own labels, ages and foster status.

About puppies

Most puppies should see a veterinarian at six to eight weeks of age to begin vaccinations and parasite preventives, and vaccines are given as a series. Ask the shelter which shots a puppy has already had.

Ages come from each shelter and are often an estimate. A puppy or kitten here is listed by its shelter as under one year old, and a senior dog as eight years or older.
